Skolithos

Skolithos (formerly spelled Scolithus or Skolithus) is a common trace fossil ichnogenus that is, or was originally, an approximately vertical cylindrical burrow. It is produced by a variety of organisms in shallow marine environments globally and appear as lineated features in sedimentary rocks..

Skolithos group, Skolithos Haldeman, 1840, Skolithos isp. Simple, unbranched, cylindrical burrows in the cross-laminated fine sand. Burrows are perfectly straight and vertical to slightly curved or inclined. Diameter is 2–3 mm; maximum length 5 cm. The burrows are filled with the host fine sand (Figs. 4 and 6).Skolithos & Ophiomorpa. T/F Nearly all rocks exposed at the surface of Kansas are sedimentary rocks such as sandstones, shales and limestones. True. Bedding Planes (strata) Produced by changes in pattern of sedimentation - color change, grain size change, or boundary style. Not a good stratigraphic up indicator.

Eight marine archetypal assemblages (Fig. 7.1) have so far been formally defined (Genise et al. 2000)—the Psilonichnus, Skolithos, Cruziana, Zoophycos, and Nereites that are usually arranged bathymetrically along the marine profile from coast to deep sea and Teredolites, Glossifungites and Trypanites ichnofacies (the latter being subdivided into the Gnathichnus and ...Field Courses. Oct 1, 2018 · Skolithos is one of the most widely reported trace fossils. It is also one of the earliest defined valid ichnotaxa, the first named in North America, and the first based on North American material. Moreover, it characterizes the littoral to shallow sublittoral Skolithos Ichnofacies (Seilacher, 1967), widely recognized by sedimentary geologists. Arenicolites belongs to the Skolithos, Cruziana and the Glossifungites ichnofacies in shallow-marine and marginal-marine settings (Zonneveld et al., 2001; Šimo and Olšavský, 2007). It ranges ...
